2x - 20 + 4x - 10 = 90

Assuming that the horizontal part of the bridge is square with the vertical, the two angles total 90o.  

 

So, add them together           (2x – 20) + (4x – 10)  =  90  

 

Add like terms                                             6x – 30  =  90  

 

Add 30 to both sides                                           6x  =  120  

 

Divide both sides by 4                                           x  =  20  

 

Substitute the value of x 

back into the original expressions       2x – 20  =  40 – 20  =  20o   this is the angle on the left  

 

                                                            4x – 10  =  80 – 10  =  70o   this is the angle on the right
