Find the coordinates of point P that lies on the line segment MQ, M (-9,-5), Q(3,5), and partitions the segment at a ratio of 2 to 5.

Thanks for the help :)

Find the coordinates of point P that lies on the line segment MQ, M (-9,-5), Q(3,5), and partitions the segment at a ratio of 2 to 5.

The coordinates of P are given by :

[ -9 + (2/7)*(3 - -9) ,  -5 + (2/7)*(5 - -5)]  =

[-9 + (2/7)*(12) , -5 + (2/7)*(10)]  =

[ -39/7,  -15/7 ]

Proof :

distance from M to P  =

sqrt [ (-9 + 39/7)^2  + (-15/7 +5)^2] =  about 4.463

distance from P to Q  =

sqrt [ ( -39/7- 3)^2 + ( -15/7 - 5)^2 ] =  about 11.157

And

4.463 / 11.157   ≈ .400  ≈  2 / 5    ≈  2  :  5

cool cool cool
