Penny had some money. She bought a book for $29 and a bag for $41. She donated half of her remaining money to charity and had $5 left. How much did Penny have at first?

Let the original amount of money=M

29 + 41 =$70 that Penny spent.

M - $70=What Penny has left.

.50[M - 70]=Donated to charity.

[M - 70] - .50[M-70] =5

M-70-.50M+35 = 5

.50M - 35 = 5

.50M =5 + 35=40 divide both sides by .50

M = $80 The original amount of money Penny started with.

Well she ended up with 5 dollars. This means that her remaining money at the end was 10$.  Now she bought a bag for 41$ and a book for 29 so 10 + 41 + 29 = 80.

Penny originally had 80$, and frankly she bought a book for way too much. Hope this helps.

lets put it in equation form: (x-41-29)/2=5. we play around with it to get: x-41-29=5*2 and then simplify it to x-41-29=10 then play around with it to get x-(41+29)=10 then symplify it to x-70=10 then play around with it to get 70+10=x so x=80.
