If the length of each side of a square is increased by 6, the area is multiplied by 16.  Find the length of one side of the original square.

x = original

area = x * x = x^2

 

now add 6

(x+6)* (x+6) = 16 x^2

-15x^2  + 12x + 36 = 0        Quadratic Formula shows x = 2 units
