A coin purse contains a mixture of nickels, dimes, and quarters. The coins have a total value of $4.25. There are 3 times more nickels than the number of dimes, and the number of quarters is 7 more than the number of dimes. Determine the number of nickels, dimes and quarters in the purse.

Let the number of dimes =D

The number of nickels    =3D

The number of quarters  =D + 7

0.1*D + 0.05*3D + 0.25*[D + 7] =4.25, solve for D

D = 5 dimes

5 x 3 = 15 nickels

5 + 7 = 12 quarters.

Check: [0.1 x 5] + [ 0.05 x 15] + [0.25 x 12] =0.50 + 0.75 + 3.00 =$4.25
