For a chemistry experiment Laura needs 300 ml of a 15% sulphuric acid solution. The Science Department has quantities of 5% acid solution and 20% acid solution. What volume of each solution is required to mix together to get her required concentration?

We have this equation :

.05(x) + .20(300-x)  =  .15(300)    simplify

.05x + 60 - .20x  = 45    combine like terms

-.15x  60 = 45      subtract 60 from both sides

-.15x  = -15    divide both sides by .15

x = 100 ml   = the amount of 5% solution

300 - x  = 300 - 100 = 200ml = amount of 20% solution
