Walt gave you an excellent answer and i am quite sure that you do understand it.
If it was a straight simplifying question you would definitely do it that way.
Since it is an equation question there is another way that I think is just a little easier.
The lowest common denominator is 6.
So you can just multiply both sieds by 6, like this
6[ x/2 + x/3 ] = 6 * 10
6x/2 + 6x/3 = 60
3x + 2x =60
5x=60
x=12
