Jacob and Nathan had an equal number of baseball cards. After Jacob gave away 49 baseball cards and Nathan gave away 85 baseball cards, Jacob had 5 times as many baseball cards as Nathan. How many baseball cards did each have at first?

Let Jacob and Nathan had x baseball cards

Jacob gave away 49 cards i.e. x - 49

Nathan gave away 85 cards i.e. x - 85


  Jacob = 5 Nathan

  x - 49 = 5 (x - 85) 

  x - 49 = 5x - 425

  x - 5x = -425 + 49

    -4x = -376 => x = 376/4 = 94

=> Jacob and Nathan had 94 baseball cards
