The % sign is called percent.
Percent is short for per centum.
Centum means hundred. It's Latin.
When they want to say something important,
they say it in Latin. Lawyers do this a lot.
Nobody knows why.
And in math, "per" means "divided by".
Anyway, 72 percent is 72 per hundred, written as 0.72.
