Two cars start from towns 700 mi apart and travel toward each other. They meet after 7 hr. Find the speed of each car if one travels 10 mph faster than the other.
Distance car 1 traveled = x
Distance car 2 traveled = y
Use formula d=rt
Total distance traveled for both cars = 700
x + y = 700
speed = s
7s = x
7(s + 10) = y
Substitute
7s + 7s + 70 = 700
14s = 630
s = 45
Car 1's speed is 45 mph
Car 2's speed is 55 mph

AoPS doesn't have much good math problems currently, as everyone is crying over their AMC 10 score lol. So I came back here
Yeah, me too! 52.5 pts for a sixth grader. SOBS!
Don't worry, I'm fine, and PLEASE don't give me any comfort.
Would you like comfort?
its ok i got a 56 as a 7th grader... we dont talk abou that...
i probably only improved like 20 this time around....
eh who cares its not like it matters anyways im only in middle school
Let the speed of one car =S
The speed of the other =S + 10
7S + 7(S + 10) = 700, solve for S
S =45 mph - speed of one car
45 + 10 =55 mph - speed of the 2nd car.
Two cars start from towns 700 mi apart and travel toward each other. They meet after 7 hr. Find the speed of each car if one travels 10 mph faster than the other.
700 ml / 7hr = 100 mph = 45mph + 55mph
700 / 7 = 100 100 / 2 = 50
1) 50 - 5 = 45 mph
2) 50 + 5 = 55 mph
