Flying with the wind, a small plane flew 404 mi in 2 h. Flying against the wind, the plane could fly only 386 mi in the same amount of time. Find the rate of the plane in calm air and the rate of the wind.

D=RT

D: Distance

R: Rate

T: Time

Let the wind speed be W

The plane speed is P

Calculate P: 404/2 = 202

Flying wiith the wind P + W

Flying against the wind P - W

With this info, can you set up a system of equations and solve it?

(I recommend to set both sides of the equation equal in terms of time, or D/R)

404 / 2 =202 mph - its speed with the wind.

386/2 =193 mph -its speed against the wind

[202 + 193] / 2 =197.5 mph - its speed in still air.

[202 - 193] / 2 = 9 - mph  - the speed of the wind.

The above typo of 9 mph for the speed of the wind should read 4.5 mph instead, Sorry about that.
