A steamboat travels 8 km/h faster than a freighter. The steamboat travels 116 km in the same time the freighter travels 100 km. Find the speed of each boat

Using the equation d = s * t , we have this:

Steamboat: 116 = 58 * t

Freighter: 100 = 50 *t

We also know that the time in these two equations are the same.

Both of these equations have the time equal 2. According to them (the two equations), the steamboat's speed is 58 km / hour, and the freighter's speed is 50 km / hour. 58 - 50 = 8, so that confirms that the steamboat's speed is 58 km / hour, and the freighter's speed is 50 km / hour.

Let the freighter's speed =S

The steamboat's speed    =S + 8

116/[S +8] = 100 / S, solve for S

S =50 km/h - the freighter's speed

50 + 8 = 58 km/h - the steamboat's speed
