During the budget crisis in California, RCC Business Department was forced to cut 48 sections of classes for the Fall 2011 term. This was a 40% cut.  How many sections were offered by the Department before the 40% cut?

If they cut 48 sections then that means that the original number of sections is times 0.4 (40%)
This can be expressed as x*0.4=48

Solving for x, simply rearrange to x=48/0.4
48*04=120 => x=120

You can double check this by 120*0.4 which is 48.
