In a container you have a mixture of 150L of water and alcohol in the ratio of 2 to 3, respectively. 40L of this mixture are extracted and the rest is combined with a 36-liter mixture containing 24L of alcohol and the rest of the water. After this, what is the new relationship of water and alcohol?
You start with 150L of a mixture.
You drain out 40L, leaving you with 110L.
This is in the ratio (water to alcohol) of 2:3.
Therefore 2/5 of the 110L is water: 2/5 x 110 = 44L of water.
and 3/5 of the 110L is alcohol: 3/5 x 110 = 66L of alcohol.
To this you add 24L of alcohol and 12L of water.
You now have a mixture of 44 + 12 = 66L of water and 66 + 24 = 90L of alcohol.
water : alcohol = 66 : 90 = 11 : 15
