Two square based pyramids are stacked on top of each other so that they form the classic egg timer what is the possible volume of sand this egg timer could hold if the base of each pyramid is 5cm by 5cm and the height of each pyramid is 7cm

Volume of each pyramid is given by    a^2 h/3     a = 5  h = 7

Volume = 25 * 7/3 = 58 1/3 cm^3    for EACH      total volume would be = 2 x 58.33 = 116 2/3 cm^3

To use as a timer , you would likely only use the  58  1/3 cm^3 volume so the sand could trickle out of one and into the other pyramid.
