While walking on a plane surface, a traveler first headed 19 miles north, then 16 miles west, then 3 miles south and finally 4 miles east. How many miles from the starting point was the traveler after these four legs of the journey?

Are you looking for distance or displacement?

I assumed, based off of the wording, that this was based on displacement. The question is, "How many miles from the starting point was the traveler after completing these 4 legs of the journey"

I'm assuming this is absolute distance, not distance traveled on foot.

19 - 3 = 16

16 - 4 = 12

$$\sqrt{16^{2} + 12^{2}} = \sqrt{256 + 144} = \sqrt{400} =20$$

He moved an overall of 20 miles from the starting point.
