For the superscript: You can highlight a certain section of text while typing up a post, then go to the top "Format" menu and select "Superscript" from the drop-down list. You can also first click "Superscript" from the drop-down menu at "Format", and anything you type afterwards will be in ^{superscript :)}

a 7⁄8 * a ‾ 3⁄4

since the base is same, add the powers

= a ^(7/8 - 3/4)

= a ^(1/8)

I am not sure what the question was but Novice's interpretation may be correct.  Thank you Novice.
