I have a poor memory so for me the trick is always to concentrate on understanding as much as possible and back it up with practice, practice and more practice to try and sink it into my brain.
This is true for all mathematics and for many other subjects as well.
When you are answering questions with formulas always write the formula and never copy it as you do so. If you do not know it yet then then you can look at it then cover it over before you write it, you can then check that you got it right.
Again this is not just calculus advice.
If you are mathematical by nature then hang in there. Calculus is extremely powerful and so much fun.
