You are one mile from your home. You can walk at a speed of 4 miles per hour. The subway comes by every 15 minutes, and you heard one come by 3 minutes ago. The subway ride takes 8 minutes.

1a: How many minutes will it take to get home by subway if you take the next train?

1b: Write a verbal model that relates the time it would take to walk home, your walking speed, and the distance to your home.

                                                     _?_x_?_=_?_

1c: Assign labels to your verbal model. Use t to represent the unknown value.

1d: Use the labels to translate your verbal model into an equation.

1e: Use mental math to solve the equation.

1f: Which will get you home faster, walking or thanking the subway? Explain.

These are the steps to solve the problem:

Verbal Model---Ask yourself what you need to know to solve the problem. Then write a verbal model that will give you what you need to know.

Labels-----Assign labels to each part of your verbal model.

Algebraic Model-Use the labels to write an algebraic model based on your verbal model.

Solve-----Solve the algebraic model and answer the original question.

Check-----Check that your answer is reasonable.

1a.) the time a train goes by is 15 min you heard one 3 min ago so subtract that to get 12 min waiting time then add the actual 8 min ride home to gert a tyotal of 20 mins to get home

1b. - I don't compleatly get this one but it would take 15mins to get to your house at a speed of 4 miles per hour.  this is why - 4miles/60mins = 1mile/xmins   x=15

1f. - it would be faster to walk home.  You heard the subway come 3mins ago so subtract that from 15 = 12 then add the 8mins it takes to ride it = 20   to walk home it would take 15mins because at 4miles per hour you and walk 1 mile in 15mins

1b.) if you were to walk averaging 4 mph and you are only a mile from home divide 60( #of min in an hour) by 4(mph) to get 15(min of walking time)
