Mr. Morris is going to save money and replace his sailboat's mainsail himself. He must determine the area of the mainsail in order to buy the correct amount of material. Calculate the area of the parallelogram to determine how much material should be purchased. Be sure to explain how to decompose this shape into rectangles and triangles. Describe their dimensions and show your work.
Parallelogram with base of 14 feet, height of 12 feet, and triangle base of 3 feet.
The area of a parallelogram is A = BH where B = base and H = high so in the problem, B = 14 and H = 12 so our equation would be 14*12 = A and we get our area is 168 or as an equation A = 168
...only partial credit for not including units this WILL happen in your further education or when working in the REAL WORLD !!
12 FT X 14 FT = 168 FT2
Just a freindly warning.....
NASA lost a very expensive satellite a few years ago because someone left units off of a calculation ...or used feet instead of cm or someothing like that .... UNITS are VERY VERY important !!!!.....especially if you are dealing with people's lives ( like medicine doses)...or engineering:
FROM 1999:
NASA lost a $125 million Mars orbiter because a Lockheed Martin engineering team used English units of measurement while the agency's team used the more conventional metric system for a key spacecraft operation, according to a review finding released Thursday.
so if you are wondering what 3x5 is then you are looking at the right answer. So let's say you start out with counting by 3's so 3,6,9,12,15. Yes it goes to 15. But that is not the answer. So let's try counting by 5's. So 5,10,15. Ok so that's it. There is your answer three times five is fifteen. Now if you could hear5 me that would be great. And I am a girl. But my name sounds like a boy but I am a girl.
