Sara has some oranges. She sold 40% more than she ate. If she sold 70 oranges, how many did she eat?

She ate 30 oranges because she has 70 oranges

ate 40 more that she ate

add 30

= 70

No that is not correct Cue

I like to do these in boxes.  Unfortunately I cannot put a frame around my boxes so you will have to imagine that they are there.

AteSold
100%

140%

(of how much she ate)

this must be 100/2

50

70

note 140/2=70

A more normal way of doing this is to start by saying

S=140% of A

S=1.4A

sub in S=70

70=1.4A

A=50

She ate 50 apples.  I bet she got a big belly ache from that!
