After Jet spent 1/9 of his money and John spent 1/3 of his money, they had the same amount of money left. How much money did each of them have in the end if both John and Jet had $1176 at first?

A==Jet,    B==John

A + B ==1176.......................(1)

8/9A ==2/3B.........................(2), solve for A, B

Use substitution to get:

A==504 - what Jet started with

B==672 - what John started with.

504  - (1/9*504) ==504 - 56 ==$448 - what Jet had in the end.

672  - (1/3*672) ==672 -  224==$448 - what Jon had in the end.

Let Jet had money x

then John had 1176 - x

money left after John spent 1/9 = 8/9x

money left after John spent 1/3, = 2/3 (1176 - x)

Since both had same money left

So, 8/9x = 2/3 (1176 - x)

=> 8/9x = 784 - 2/3x

=> 14/9x = 784 => x = 504

So, Initally Jet had 504 and John had 672. In the end Jet will have 504 * 8/9 = 448

and John will have 672 * 2/3 = 448
