"For the school play, the advance tickets cost 3$, while tickets at the door cost 5$. Thirty more tickets were sold at door than in advance, and $2630 was collected. How many of each kind of ticket were sold?"

Ah......they aren't that bad....all these are similar....

Let N be the number sold at the door

Then, N -30   must be the ones sold in advance.....since 30 fewer were sold

Then

Price of an advance ticket * number sold + Price of a door ticket * number sold = total collected.....so we have

3 (N - 30)  + 5N = 2630   simplify

3n -90 + 5N = 2630

8N - 90   = 2630       add 90 to both sides

8N  = 2720     divide both sides by 8

N  = 340    this is the number of door tickets sold

340 - 30  = 310  =  the advanced tickets sold
