THe average annual precipitation on Mt.Washington, New Hampshore, is 90 inches. During one particularly wet year, different news reports carried the following statements: "The precipitation this year is 200% of normal" and "The precipitation this year is 200% above normal." What does each of these statements imply about the precipitation during this year? Do the two statements have the same meaning? Explain!

100% of normal would mean   100% x 90 = 90 inches     normal

200% of normal would be        200% x 90 = 180 inches    Double normal

100% ABOVE normal would be 90 PLUS 100% x 90 = 180 inches

200% ABOVE normal     would be  90 PLUS 180 inches = 270 inches !
