On a rainy day, every kid at Margo's school brings a raincoat, an umbrella, or both. 8% of the kids bring both. The total number of kids with umbrellas is twice the total number of kids with raincoats. What percent of the kids bring only an umbrella?

For simplicity.....let there be 100 students in the school

So.....8 bring both

So....let x be the number who bring raincoats

And let 2x be the number that bring umbrellas

The ones that bring only raincoats = x - 8

The ones that bring only umbrellas = 2x - 8

So....

(Number who bring raincoats only) + (Number who bring both) + (Number who bring umbrellas only) = 100

(x - 8) +  8  +  (2x - 8) = 100

3x - 8 =  100

3x = 108

x  = 36

2x = 72

So

The number (percent) who bring only umbrellas =  2(36) - 8   =   64 (%)
