In an elevator in a tall building is at a point 180 feet above the ground .The elevator moves at a rate of 12 feet per secound.

1 Represent how far above the ground the elevator is, y,after descening for x seconds

2 Using your equation from (part a),how long will it take the elevator to reach the ground level?

3 The elevator starts on the ground level,and then ascends 250 feet ,to the top floor.How long does it take the elevator to reach the top floor?(Hint: You will not use the excat same equation you did for (part a )or (part b).

1. y = 180 - 12x

2.  At ground level, y will = 0   ....so

0  =  180 - 12x    add 12x to both sides

12x  = 180             divide both sides by 12

x  = 15  seconds

3.  We have

250  = 12x     divide both sides by 12

250 / 12 = x   =  about 20.83 seconds
