In an equation like 86-3xF=54+2xF do you combine 2 and F and 3 and F?

Alan has assumed that your x is a multiply sign.   He is most likely correct.

On a computer we usually use * to mean multiply so that x is kept at as a letter.

This is not a criticism of your question I am just teaching you so that you will know next time.

So your    3xF = 3*F = 3F

In algebra if a number and a letter or two letters are right up against each other then there is an invisable multiply sign between them.  If there is a number then the number MUST come first

so

3*R*y*2 can be written as 6Ry  or   6yR

Yes.  Add 3xF to both sides

86 -3xF + 3xF = 54 + 2xF + 3xF

86 = 54 + 5xF

Now subtract 54 from both sides

32 = 5xF

Now divide both sides by 5

32/5 = F

(or F = 32/5)

.
