In the diagram below, we have BC ll DE, AB=8, BD=6, and AE=12. Find AC.

It's kind of dark. I am not sure how to solve, please do not give me the answer, I only want an explanation of how to solve this.

Since BC  is  parallel to DE,  then BC  splits  the sides  in equal proportions.....thus we have  that

 

AB / AD  = AC /AE

 

Note  that  AD  =  AB + BD  =  6 + 8  =  14....so we have

 

8 / 14   =  AC  / 12

 

4 / 7   =  AC   /12

 

Can you take it from here   ????
