Lawrence has (15/32) of the money before he gave any away....and Kenny had (8/32) =(1/4) of the money before getting any from Lawrence....and John has (9/32) of the money, originally...call T the total...and we know that....

(1/4)T + .40(15/32)T =  (9/32)T + 60    simplify

(1/4)T + (2/5)(15/32)T  = (9/32)T + 60

(1/4)T + (3/16)T  = (9/32)T + 60

(7/16)T  = (9/32)T + 60     subtract (9/32)R from both sides

(7/16 - 9/32)T   = 60

(5/32)T = 60     multiply both sides by (32/5)

T = 60(32/5)  = $384   and this is the total  amount of money

And Lawrence gave Kenny  (3/16)(384)  = $72
