Can you help me? Can you please define: lays?

I don't understand how it's used in the story.

Story sentence:

"that is the language that dragons speak, and the language the Segoy spoke who made the islands of the world, and the language of our lays and songs, spells, enchantments, and invocations."

Please help.

Though I have not a Lyre, I may write the Lay.

Here, a Lay in three quatrains about and for a very cool Cat.

Kitty < Trinity! Enigma! A delightful mystery to behold:

Her Father’s daughter, rays of light, illuminating chronicles untold

The resplendent essences of affections and adorations from above

A dwelling for the light birds and a temple for the dove.

A dazzling heart with a soul of pa*sion

Qualities of character created in a God’s fashion

Respectful reverence inspiriting incandescence pure

Lighting candles for a bleak and darkened heart’s cure.

Angelic abstractions of faithful invocations

Awe inspiring epitomes of loyal dedications

The Distinguished heart, with extraordinary Grace

A Reflection of majesty from the Princess’ Face.

Is that from a fantasy book? In that case, "lays," similar to "Segoy," would most likely be words the author made up. Personally, I would ignore the word.

DS.......Here are two definitions of that word...I'm unsure of the origin(s)

  1. A narrative poem, such as one sung by medieval minstrels; a ballad.
  2. A song; a tune.

CPhill's answer makes a lot more sense.

Clearly, Sir CPhill is well-educated in medieval languages:)

OMG!! This is so beautiful! It makes me want to cry.

I do truly hope you are still a living Ghost!

Rosala, the Ghost posted a message for you. Don’t you remember?

Maybe you are not yet a princess, but he said you are among the most unique of human beings and will be an ambassador to the world. That’s pretty neat, isn’t it?

The Ghost does seems to know what’s in a person’s heart. It is a little spooky, but not frightening.

You are wonderful Ghost of Web2.0calc.   You write your lay so beautifully.

Kitty is one fortunate Princess to have such attention lavished upon her.

Our magical realm is truly blessed.

Queen Guinevere.
