Let's say the question would be something like this:

A flower is 80 cm tall, it gets 5% taller every day. How many days would it take for it to double it's size?

Could anyone explain this using logarithms? I'm still trying to understand them but can't seem to figure out how to solve a problem like this. =)

Here is the equation we need to solve

160 = 80( 1.05)^t    where t is the number of days to double the height

divide both sides by 80

2 =  ( 1.05)^t       take the log of both sides

log 2 = log ( 1.05)^t     and, by a log property, we can write

log 2 = t log (1.05)     divide both sides by log (1.05)

log 2 / log 1.05  = t ≈  14.2 days

Note that the original height is immaterial....it would take this many days to double the height no matter how tall its original height
