Madonna was walking down the street one day minding her own business when she noticed a sign pointing the way to a new zoo.  She didn’t have anything else to do that day, so she and her (new) bodyguard decided to visit the new zoo.

After a few hours enjoying all the interesting animals Madonna noticed a frizzy-haired lady in a white lab coat sitting on a bench near the wombat enclosure.  Madonna loves frizzy hair so she sat down next to the woman and said, “Don’t you just love wombats?”  The woman turned to her and replied, “Yes, of course I do.  I’m the head veterinarian here at the zoo, and these wombats are my favorites.    Unfortunately we are having a problem with them at the moment.”  She went on to explain that 16 2/3% of the zoo’s 150 wombats had become infected with either fleas or ticks or both.

Just last week, she sent her two assistants, Orville and Wilbur, to count the number of wombats with fleas, the number with ticks, and the number with both fleas and ticks.  Unfortunately, they didn’t follow her directions and determined only that twenty wombats have fleas and fourteen wombats have ticks.  The frizzy-haired veterinarian was worried that she would have to re-examine all 150 wombats to determine how many have only fleas, how many have only ticks, and how many have both fleas and ticks.

Just then, Madonna’s new bodyguard, who was quite a bit smarter than the last one, (who got fired over some ice cream incident,) shouted, “I know how many wombats have only fleas, how many have only ticks, and how many have both!”  And he was correct.

What did Madonna’s bodyguard figure out?

$$16\frac{2}{3}\%\;of\;150=25$$

25 wombats have fleas or ticks or both.

The frizzy headed vet (who i have called Lizzy) should have just got the guys to give the wombats a flea and tick bath in the first place and then they would not have needed to count them at all.

This vet is nicknamed Dizzy Frizzy Lizzy.        I wonder how she got that pet name.

11 have only flea

5 have only ticks

9 have both
