A girl has some beads. She use 1/3 of the beads to make a bracelet. She uses 3/5 of the beads to make a necklace. She used 36 more beads for the necklace. How many beads did she use for the bracelet?

Please give me a method, not the answer!

And no algebra!

Well, in algebra, there is one method that will get you the answer very quickly. Let's say that the bead is a triangle. A nice big triangle. Now, since we know the hypotenuse is 1/3 of the number of beads square rooted, we can use this formula (saying "x" is the number of beads left over) to find your answer.

3x(pi squared-tan87)+1/3 of 5

Once you get that answer, we can apply Newton's Laws of Motion. We are going to apply the law that an object in motion will remain in motion unless acted on by an opposing force. We are going to assume that the beads are being acted upon by gravity. We will use this formula to produce the final answer. "x" is equal to the number of bead left over, and "v" is equal to the answer of the last formula. "a" is equal to 3/5.

v2 = v02 + 2a(x − x0)

However, if you want to do this in one step, use this equation.

Φ = εσA(T4 − T04)

I hope this helps! Let me know if you get it or not. I have other formulas that are more complicated, but would still work.

Hi Guest,
For starters you can completely ignore Mitt Romney's answer, it is complete nonsense.

1/3 = 5/15 and 3/5 = 9/15
so 5/15ths of the beads are used for the bracelet and 9/15th are used for the necklace.

the difference between these is 4/15ths
So
4/15ths of the beads is 36 beads
which means that 1/15th is 36/4 = 9 beads.
Now, you can work out how many are used it the bracelet.

sorry you need algebra to do this sort of problem. It's not that bad

Let N be the number of beads for the necklace
Let B be the number of beads for the bracelet

Let T be the total number of beads she has

B = T/3 ; from the first statement
N = (3/5)T ; from the 2nd statement
N = B + 36 ; from the 3rd statement

plugging (1) and (2) into (3) we get

(3/5)T = T/3 + 36
(3/5)T - T/3 = 36
(9/15)T - (5/15)T = 36
(4/15)T = 36
4T = 540
T = 135

B = T/3 = 135/3 = 45

she used 45 beads for the bracelet

Wha-a-a-a-a-at?! This isn't nonsense. It is proven SCIENCE. Are you saying that YOU think you're smarter than your WOULD BE PRESIDENT of the United States of America? Because I think otherwise. Go home Rom. You are drunk.

Mitt Romney.
Behave yourself.
If you are going to abuse people you can at least work out who it is that you want to abuse.
You obviously have some intelligence but you are behaving like a 2 year old brat.
If you cannot channel your intelligence appropriately, you are not be welcome here.

Okay, perhaps I crossed a line. I apologize for my behaviour (I'm not being sarcastic).

Hello Mitt Romney,
There is no perhaps about it. You definitely crossed a line. BUT, it was very grown up of you to apologize, I appreciate that. Rom very generously puts a lot of his time into this forum to help people learn. He did not even say anything about you and you were extremely rude to him. So please direct your apologize to Rom and then we can all move on.

Oops! It appears I was rude to the wrong person. This just made it very awkward... Sorry to Rom. It wasn't intended to be said to you. However, I do regret writing that last sentence down, no matter who I said it to. After reviewing it, I concure with Rom's answer.

Well, Mitt Romney, it appears that you have done your penance.
