We can reword the question above as '3+5=8'. Now, replace 3 and 5 with y and b. What do you get? y+b=8.

I gave up on the question and looked at the answer. Somehow it was y = 0.6b. I have no idea how they did that.

Now, think about why 3/5 (which is 0.6) is needed...
As you see, it is the ratio between blue and yellow paint. So, 3/5 of 5 is 3, which means the yellow paint is equal to 3/5th of the blue paint.
