For his new room, Darien's grandmother gave him a handmade quilt. The quilt is made up of 16 square set in 4 rows of 4. If the area of each square is 324in.^2, what are the dimensions of the quilt in inches?

Hi tiger,
So the quilt is made up of 16 squares set in 4 rows of 4. The area of each square is 324in.^2; what are the dimensions of the quilt in inches?

It would help if you drew this scenario out, the big square (quilt) made of 16 small squares.

Then, since the 16 squares are all same-sized squares, their lengths, widths, and areas are all the same. This will come in useful later.

First, find the area of each small square. The area of each is 324, whose square root is 18. This means that the small squares are all 18 in. x 18 in.
Now, each side of the big square (quilt) is made up of 4 squares. So the length of one side would be 4 x 18.
However, since it is a square, the width is also the same length, 4 x 18.

Find 4 x 18, and that is both the length and width of the quilt in square inches:)
