Ziyu has 240 more ducks than chickens in her farm. She sold 2/5 of the Ducks and bought another 450 chickens. As a result the number of chickens is now twice the number of ducks. How many Ducks had she at first?

Ziyu has 240 more ducks than chickens in her farm. She sold 2/5 of the Ducks and bought another 450 chickens. As a result the number of chickens is now twice the number of ducks. How many Ducks had she at first?

Let the number of chickens=C

240 + C=Number of ducks

3/5[240+C] Ducks remaining

C+450= Number of chickens now.

C+450=1.2[240+C], so

Chickens=810+450=1,260 Now

Ducks=630 Now

Solve for C785: C785+450 = 1.2 (C785+240) Expand out terms of the right hand side: C785+450 = 1.2 C785+288. Subtract 1.2 C785 from both sides: (C785-1.2 C785)+450 = (1.2 C785-1.2 C785)+288. C785-1.2 C785 = -0.2 C785: -0.2 C785+450 = (1.2 C785-1.2 C785)+288. 1.2 C785-1.2 C785 = 0: 450-0.2 C785 = 288. Subtract 450 from both sides: (450-450)-0.2 C785 = 288.-450 450-450 = 0: -0.2 C785 = 288.-450 288.-450 = -162.: -0.2 C785 = -162. Divide both sides of -0.2 C785 = -162. by -0.2: (-0.2 C785)/(-0.2) = (-162.)/(-0.2) (-0.2)/(-0.2) = 1: C785 = (-162.)/(-0.2) (-162.)/(-0.2) = 810.: Answer: | | CHICKENS = 810.

The original number of ducks would be the present number of ducks or 630/ (3/5)=1050.
