Michael was 4 times as old as Brandon.

How old is Brandon now?

Let m = Michael
Let b = Brandon

(1)m=b+12(2)m17=4(b17)|m=b+12b+1217=4(b17)b+5=4b683b=63b=21(1)m=b+12|b=21m=21+12m=33

Michael is 33 and Brandon is 21

Brandon is now x years old. Michael is now  x + 12 years old.

Then:

M=x+12                            now

(x17)4=M17         17 years ago .

4x68=(x+12)17     M=x+12

3x=68+1217                - x + 68

3x=63                                         / 3

x=21

Brandon is now 21 years old. Michael is now 33 years old.
