Miriam took a survey, asking each family in her neighborhood how many pets they have. She made a graph showing the results:
What is the average number of pets per family?
avg. number of pets per family = (total number of pets) / (total number of families)
total number of pets = 0 * 6 + 1 * 3 + 2 * 3 + 3 * 6 + 4 * 1 + 5 * 1 = 36
total number of families = 6 + 3 + 3 + 6 + 1 + 1 = 20
avg. number of pets per family = 36 / 20 = 9/5 = 1.8
