The annual production of rice is
32,000,000,000,000 Kg. How many years
would it take to grow a mole or rice grains?
mole = 602 000 000 000 000 000 000 000

mole = 602 000 000 000 000 000 000 000

A mole of rice grains = 6.02 x 10 23
There is an average of about 36,590 grains of rice in a Kg

So a mole of rice grains must weigh
(6.02 x 10 23) / 36590 = 1.6453 x 10 19 Kg

Annual production = 3.2 x 10 13

Number of years = (1.6453 x 10 19) / (3.2 x 10 13) = > about 515,406 years.

The estimated production of rice is off by a factor of 48.
It would only take 10.8 years.

Are you talking about the annual world production of rice which is an number that was given in the question?
What should that number have been?

The student gave an incorrect value for the annual production of rice 32,000,000,000,000 Kg (32,000,000,000 Metric tons).

About 670 Million Metric Tons of rice are grown annually (2010) sagevfoods.com/MainPages/Rice101/Production.htm?

Your math is correct but the data is wrong.

670,000,000,000 Kg Rice / year. 47.8 times less than posted. So it would take 2,4616,405 years to grow (a mole of rice grains) -- an ocean of rice.

Not sure where the 10.8 years came from. It might be all the sake (rice wine) we were sampling. That is what led to a googling for rice and to your form. We hope it did not cause a distraction.

Hi An Ocean of Rice,
You didn't cause me any distraction, this is what is so great about the internet, you can end up anywhere!
Even in a young people's maths forum !
I thought that your input was great.
Thank you.
