x/y  =  5/7          y/z  =  3/4          What is the value of  (x + y)/z

Since  (x + y)/z  =  x/z + y/z  and we know the value of  y/z  we need to find the value of x/z.

Starting with  x/y  =  5/7

                      7x  =  5y      (cross multiplying)

                        y  =  7x/5   (dividing)

Substituting into  y/z  =  3/4

                    (7x/5)/z  =  3/4

                       7x/5z  =  3/4

                  (7/5)(x/z)  =  3/4

                           x/z  =  (3/4)(5/7)

                          x/z  =  15/28

Therefore  x/z  +  y/z  =  15/28  +  3/4

                 x/z  +  y/z  =  15/28  +  21/28

                 x/z  +  y/z  =  36/28

Thus::  (x + y)/z  =  x/z + y/z  =  36/28  =  18/14  =  9/7
