A dress has been reduced in price by 15% to $12. What was the original price of the dress (to the nearest cent) before it was marked down.

The original price minus 15% of that price is $12.00.

Let p represent the original price; then we get:  p - 0.15p  =  12.00

Simplify:                                                                       .85p  =  12.00

Divide by 0.85                                                                    p  =  $14.12
