Let f(x) = x^4-3x^2 + 2 and g(x) = 2x^4 - 6x^2 + 2x -1. Let b be a constant. What is the smallest possible degree of the polynomial f(x) + b* g(x)?

If b elimonates some of the terms when adding like terms, it can diminish the degree of the result

if b = - 1/2         the x^4 and the x^2 terms will cancel   and you will have a degree of ONE result
