volume in question   =   volume of cylinder - volume of sphere

volume of cylinder   =   ( area of base )( height )

volume of cylinder   =   ( π r2 )( height )

volume of cylinder   =   ( π(3/2)2 )( 8 )     cubic inches

volume of cylinder   =   ( π(9/4) )( 8 )   cubic inches

volume of cylinder   =   18π                 cubic inches

volume of sphere   =   (4/3)π r3

volume of sphere   =   (4/3)π(2/2)2  cubic inches

volume of sphere   =   (4/3)π           cubic inches

volume in question   =   18π - (4/3)π   cubic inches

volume in question   =   (50/3)π         cubic inches

volume in question   ≈   52             cubic inches
