The length of a rectangle is 3 more than twice the width. If the area is 20 square feet, what is the width of the rectangle?

This one  isn't too bad

 

Let   L = 2W + 3

 

So   we have

 

L * W   = 20

 

(2W + 3) (W)  = 20    simplify

 

2W^2  + 3W  = 20

 

2W^2  +  3W  - 20   =   0       factor  as

 

(2W  - 5) ( W + 4)  =  0

 

Only the first factor  helps us

 

Set to 0 and solve for  W

 

2W - 5  = 0

2W = 5

W  = 5/2  = 2.5 ft
