c = sqrt  [ a^2 + b^2]     square both sides

 

c^2  = a^2 + b^2     subtract a^2 from  both sides

 

c^2  - a^2  = b^2     take the square root both both sides

 

sqrt [ c^2 - a^2  ] =  b
