At a particular restaurant, each onion ring has 65 calories and each slider has 250 calories. A combination meal with onion rings and sliders has a total of 5 onion rings and sliders altogether and contains 695 calories. Determine the number of onion rings in the combination meal and the number of sliders in the combination meal.

Lets say the number of onion rings is x, and the number of sliders is y:

 

x+y=5-->13x+13y=65

 

65x+250y=695-->13x+50y=139

 

so 37y=74

 

so the number of sliders is 2

 

and the number of onion rings is 3

Call  N  the number of onion rings

So  5 - N =  number of sliders.....so we have that

 

65N  +  250 (5 - N)  =  695       simplify

 

65N  +  1250  - 250 N  =  695

 

65N - 250N =  695 - 1250

 

-185N  =  -555   divide both sides  by  -185

 

N  =  3    (onion rings)

 

5 - 3  =  2   (sliders)
