-(5x+7)+1=-5x-5

Well, a negative outside the parentheses just turns the numbers inside the parentheses to negative numbers.

-5x+-7+1=-5x-5

Add like-terms. I highlighted the like-terms we have to deal with (which is -7 and 1).

-5x+-6=-5x-5

Subtract the lowest variable on each side. Here the variable is the same, so it doesn't matter which one we use.

-5x+-6=-5x-5

-5x       -5x

___________

       -6=-5x

Divide the variable on each side.

-6    -5x

__ = __

-5    -5

x=1.2

1.2 made into a fraction would be 1 1/5.
