Luis Nunez begins walking at a rate of 8 mph. Forty-five minutes after he leaves, his wife, Kristin, realizes that Luis has forgotten his wallet. Kristin gets on her bicycle and begins riding at a rate of 28 mph along the same path that Luis took.

Here is Luis' head start rate x time = distance

8 m/h x 3/4 h = 6 miles (Luis' walks really fast !)

Kristen then takes off on here bike (she is pretty fast too!)

when are the two distances of L and K equal?

Luis will go 6 m + 8 m/h * x miles

Kristen will go 28 m/**h ***x miles these miles are equal when K catches L

6 + 8x = 28 x solve for 'x' which is th amount of HOURS they will meet

6 = 20x

x = 3/10 hr after K takes off on her bike she will catch L

How far is that? 28 m/hr x 3/10 hr = 8.4 miles from home.... and hopefully K has BROUGHT the wallet and not just the info that L forget it! !
