Let total money Joe have = \$x

Let Cost of can of drink = \$y

Hence cost of plate of chicken = \$(y+3)

He spent 3/5 of his money on a can of drink and

plate of chicken

Now money left = x - 3/5x = 2/5x

He spent rest of money to buy another 2 similar

cans of drink and has \$1 left.

So Cost of 2 cans = y + y = \$2y

Now money left = \$1

=>  2/5x - 2y = 1

=>  2x - 10y = 5                 -- (A)

Also Cost of one can and a plate of chicken = 3/5x

=>       y + (y + 3) = 3/5x

=>     5 (2y + 3) = 3x

=>       3x - 10y = 15                -- (B)

Subtract (A) from (B) we get

x = 10

from (A)       y = 1/10 (2x-5) = 1/10 (20-5) = 1.5

=> Cost of Can of drink = \$y = \$1.5
