A 5-inch by 7-inch picture is placed on a rectangular piece of red paper such that a 0.5-inch wide red border is seen along each side of the picture. What is the area of the visible red border, in square inches? I

drew it out and added .5 to each side or 6x8  and im rly confused

Subtract the area of the picture from the area of the red paper.

(6*8) - (5*7) = 48 - 35 = 13 inches squared.

Yes, you're on the right track. Adding one to each side, we have \(5+1, 7+1\) , so the overall dimensions are  \(6\cdot8\) . Thus, the answer is \(48-35=\boxed{13}.\)
